When Do You Need Your Pool Refinished?

pool refinished

Pools were made to hold water! Leaving an in-ground pool empty for too long can cause some serious problems.

If you have an older pool it most likely has a plaster interior finish. Plaster finishes are an economical choice, but they tend to not last as long as newer types of finishes. This type of finish is starting to lose its prominence because of the demand for more natural and beautiful finishes. Pool finishes that incorporate ocean glass beads, pebbles, quartz, or shells are rising in popularity, so if you need to have your pool refinished one of these would be a good choice. Here are some common mistakes that can damage your pool finish.

Improper Water Chemistry

Not having your water chemicals at the right levels can damage traditional plaster pool surfaces. Keeping your pH, chlorine, and alkalinity in the correct ranges will be easier on your pool finish, pump and filtration equipment, and you. Paying attention to your chemistry levels will keep you from needing to read our post on clearing an algae bloom, too.

Leaving it Empty

Wait! Just because the summer’s winding down doesn’t mean you should drain your pool. An inground pool was built to hold water, and if you drain your pool groundwater can rise and actually push your pool out of the ground. An empty pool can leave the finish vulnerable to damage from debris, the sun, and a pool popping out the ground like a boat on rising water.

Hitting the Golden Years

The hard truth is that pool finishes don’t live forever, as much as we all want them to. A typical plaster pool finish last about 12 to 14 years, while a pebble or similar style finish can last over 20 years.
